DVD rental website

Filmgalerie Berlin is a Berlin based DVD rental store.

The store offers over 28,000 titles as DVD, VHS & Blu-Ray, which are curently avilable for rent through a manual rental process in the physical store only.

The team redesigned Filmgalerie Berlin's website and integrated an e-commerce based DVD rental flow, according to business and clients' needs.

The Problem

The brief challenged us to collaborate with a local business and design a responsive website.

How might we organizing the information in a clear way for both the customers and the stakeholders, and integrating an e-commerce flow for the store products.

The Research

Research methods applied:
• 2 x Interviews (1 Stakeholder, 1 Client)
• Business and competitive Research
• Heuristic Analysis

The stakeholder raised the unique value the store presents in the film market as a living film library, and shared the habits of daily maintaining the rental process.

The client shared their general satisfaction with the film selection, yet reported a wish for a personalised, digital product with a wish-list, general recommendations, and more visuals information.

To the existing website structure we added features and a rental e-commerce flow that are based on the real rental process and the users’ needs.

In order to test the new features, the user flow reflects a user journey exploring their personal account, films related to past rentals, film visual galleries, and renting a film through an e-commerce path.

The Outcome

The final website is responsive with 3 breakpoints: Desktop, Tablet, and Mobile. Although the primary design is based on darker colors, for accessibility reasons it is possible to navigate between dark/light modes.

Prototyping and testing rounds generated positive feedback, increased engagement and orientation around the film archive.
An extensive thought was invested in the rental process, ensuring the digital product is simulating the real-life experience. The new rental flow is including advantaged of digital products such as digital payment, delivery option and order tracking.

The Design

Redesigning the website was a great opportunity to make the website more attractive to new users, and more comfortable to existing ones.

Based on the brand's red and white colors, and inspired by archival and Film aesthetics, we developed a new brand design guideline.
